The community of Odon, Indiana, is mourning the passing of Edward E. Borter, DVM, a respected veterinarian, veteran, mentor, and longtime community member whose life of service touched generations of people and families throughout the area.

Dr. Borter, affectionately known as “Doc,” died peacefully at Ketcham Memorial Center in Odon on September 2, 2026, at the age of 94. He was born February 29, 1932, in Newberry, Indiana, to Earl and Golda Borter.

Throughout his long life, Borter built a reputation for dedication to his profession, his community, and the people around him. His career in veterinary medicine reflected a genuine commitment to caring for animals, while his involvement in numerous organizations demonstrated his willingness to give his time and experience to causes important to the Odon community.

Borter was a veteran of the United States Navy and served his country during the Korean War. Following his military service, he pursued higher education at Purdue University, where he earned degrees in biochemistry and veterinary medicine. His connection to Purdue remained an important part of his life, and he was a devoted Boilermakers fan and proud Purdue alumnus.

Beyond his professional responsibilities, Dr. Borter became deeply involved in civic and community affairs. He served on several boards, including Ketcham Memorial Center, North Daviess Schools, the Daviess County Department of Health, and the Odon United Methodist Church. His involvement reflected a commitment to helping strengthen the institutions and organizations serving his community.

He was also a member of the Odon United Methodist Church, Elnora Masonic Lodge #616, Crane VFW Post #9297, American Legion Post #245, the American Veterinary Medical Association, and the Elnora Outdoor Club. Through these organizations, he maintained connections with fellow veterans, community members, professionals, and friends.

Family remained at the center of Dr. Borter’s life. He was married to Patricia A. Sipes for 64 years after their marriage on June 1, 1962. He leaves behind his wife, Patricia, daughters Christa Beasley and Tina McCullough, grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren who will continue to carry his memory forward.

His family also experienced the earlier loss of his son, Scott Edward Borter, DVM, who died in 2020. Scott followed his father into veterinary medicine and operated Bloomfield Veterinary Clinic for more than three decades, continuing the family’s tradition of caring for animals and serving others.

A gathering for family and friends is scheduled for September 6 at Odon United Methodist Church, followed by a Masonic memorial service, funeral service, and military rites. Dr. Borter will be laid to rest at Walnut Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Odon United Methodist Church.

Edward E. Borter leaves behind a legacy shaped by veterinary medicine, military service, faith, family, and decades of community involvement. For the people of Odon, his passing represents the loss of a respected figure whose contributions extended well beyond his professional career.
