The Warm Springs, Georgia, community is mourning the tragic death of Sergeant Chris Fisher, a 36-year-old police officer who was fatally shot while on duty late Tuesday night, September 1, 2026. His death has left family members, fellow officers, and residents of the small Meriwether County community grieving the loss of an officer remembered for his dedication, kindness, and commitment to protecting others.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Fisher was completing an unrelated traffic stop at approximately 11:57 p.m. in the parking lot of the Meriwether Country Inn on Spring Street in Warm Springs. While he remained in his patrol vehicle, a black 2026 Chevrolet Silverado pulled alongside his cruiser. The driver, identified by investigators as 23-year-old Jimmy Lee Steverson, allegedly fired multiple shots into Fisher’s patrol vehicle.

Fisher was struck by the gunfire and pronounced dead at the scene. The GBI has taken over the investigation at the request of the Warm Springs Police Department, and an autopsy was scheduled through the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office.

The shooting triggered a large law enforcement response and a statewide search for Steverson. On Wednesday morning, Anderson County Sheriff’s Office deputies in South Carolina stopped a vehicle on Interstate 85 that matched information provided by Georgia authorities. Steverson was found inside the vehicle with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was transported to a hospital and later died from his injuries.

Investigators later confirmed that Fisher had arrested Steverson only days before the fatal shooting. According to authorities and court records, the arrest involved felony charges related to drugs, a firearm, and obstruction. Newly released warrants also allege that Steverson struck Fisher during that earlier encounter. Investigators continue to examine whether that previous interaction played a role in the deadly shooting.

Fisher had joined the Warm Springs Police Department in May 2026 and was promoted to sergeant in July. Before joining the department, he had served with the Meriwether County Sheriff’s Office, Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, and Heard County Sheriff’s Office. He also previously served in the U.S. Army as a transportation specialist.

Outside his professional responsibilities, Fisher was known in Warm Springs as a friendly and approachable presence. Residents and local business employees described him as jovial, compassionate, and committed to the people he served. His death has been particularly painful for a town where police officers are familiar faces and where community relationships are often close.

Fisher was also a husband and father of two children. His family is now facing the devastating loss of a loved one who died while carrying out his responsibilities as a police officer. His colleagues are likewise mourning one of their own at a time when the department is coping with the sudden loss of a member of its small force.

A memorial began growing outside the Warm Springs Police Department as residents and law enforcement officers brought flowers and other tributes to honor Fisher. Community members have spoken about his friendliness and the compassion he showed during his time in Warm Springs.

Funeral services for Fisher are scheduled for September 8 at Flat Creek Baptist Church, with visitation preceding the service. His death remains under investigation by the GBI, which will ultimately provide its case file to the Coweta Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office.
