Texas_A night in College Station’s popular Northgate entertainment district turned frightening Saturday night after police said a gunshot was fired inside a crowded nightclub, leading to the arrest of a 19-year-old Tyler man.

According to the College Station Police Department, officers assigned to the Northgate area were nearby when they heard a gunshot coming from inside One15 nightclub in the 100 block of College Main. Officers immediately moved through the crowd and entered the establishment to locate the person believed to be responsible.

Police identified the arrested suspect as Trey Wheeler, 19, of Tyler, Texas. Officers quickly detained Wheeler inside the nightclub and recovered a firearm from his waistband, authorities said.

The investigation then uncovered an additional firearm that Wheeler had reportedly possessed while inside the club. According to police, the second firearm had been misplaced before the gunshot was fired. Both weapons were ultimately recovered and seized as evidence as investigators worked to determine exactly how the incident unfolded.

Despite the gunshot being fired inside a crowded entertainment venue, police confirmed that no injuries were reported. The absence of reported injuries provided some relief following an incident that could have had far more serious consequences given the number of people inside the nightclub.

Wheeler faces multiple charges stemming from the incident. Police said those charges include public intoxication, two counts of unlawful carrying of a weapon, two counts of unlawful carrying of a weapon in a prohibited place, deadly conduct by discharge of a firearm, disorderly conduct involving the display or discharge of a firearm, and failure to identify by providing false or fictitious information.

Reports indicate that Wheeler remained in custody following his arrest. WTAW reported that he was being held on a $20,000 bond, while bond had not yet been set on three of the charges at the time of its report.

The incident has renewed attention on safety within College Station’s Northgate district, an area heavily frequented by Texas A&M University students and other young adults. Northgate officers and the department’s entertainment-focused policing unit regularly patrol the area, particularly because of the large crowds that gather at bars and nightclubs.

College Station police have emphasized the importance of maintaining safety in the entertainment district, where officers are tasked with responding quickly to incidents involving weapons, fights, intoxication and other criminal activity. The department has previously said its specialized Northgate unit exists to provide proactive policing and adequate coverage for patrons and visitors.

Authorities have not indicated that anyone else was injured or that there is an ongoing threat to the public connected to the incident. The two recovered firearms remain important pieces of evidence as investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding the discharge.

The College Station Police Department said the investigation remains ongoing and additional information could be released as authorities review the evidence and determine whether further charges are appropriate.
