A fire at the Fort Peck Dam powerhouse in Montana prompted an emergency response late Thursday night, September 3, 2026, after an electrical failure reportedly caused a live power line to come down and ignite a fire near the facility. The incident also disrupted electricity service for thousands of customers across the region before power was restored early Friday morning.
According to reports, the outage began at approximately 11 p.m. Thursday and affected about 3,157 NorthWestern Energy customers. Valley County Emergency Services Manager Ed Malone said a transformer failure brought down a live power line, resulting in a grass fire near the Fort Peck facility. The incident quickly drew attention because of the importance of the dam and its hydroelectric powerhouses to the surrounding electrical system.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which operates Fort Peck Dam, said the flames affected only the exterior of the powerhouse. Initial information indicated that no internal power-generation components were believed to have been damaged. That assessment provided some reassurance as officials worked to determine the full effect of the electrical failure and fire.
No injuries were reported in connection with the incident, according to the available reports. The absence of reported injuries was particularly significant given the electrical hazards associated with a malfunction involving a transformer, transmission equipment and a major hydroelectric facility.
The fire also caused a temporary power disruption for communities served through the affected transmission system. NorthWestern Energy said the blackout occurred after a Western Area Power Administration transmission line went out of service. That line receives power from the federal Fort Peck Hydroelectric Project and connects with the broader regional electricity network.
Crews responded quickly to restore service. Western Area Power Administration personnel were able to bypass the affected equipment at the Fort Peck facility, allowing NorthWestern Energy crews to work toward restoring electricity to customers. Power was reportedly returned to all affected customers at approximately 12:17 a.m. Friday, meaning the outage lasted only a little over an hour.
The incident nevertheless highlighted the importance of the Fort Peck powerhouses to Montana’s regional electricity infrastructure. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers identifies Fort Peck Dam as a major multipurpose project that supports flood control, hydropower generation, water supply, irrigation, recreation, fish and wildlife management, and other public benefits.
Fort Peck Dam contains two hydroelectric powerhouses with a combined generating capacity of approximately 185 megawatts. The facility uses five Francis turbines to generate electricity, making it an important part of the federal hydropower system along the Missouri River.
Witness accounts shared with local media described a loud sound followed by visible flames near the powerhouse. However, early witness descriptions can differ from information established through official inspections, and investigators will need to determine precisely how the equipment failure developed and what caused the fire.
The incident comes as Fort Peck’s electrical infrastructure continues to undergo modernization and maintenance. Projects involving powerhouse electrical equipment and switchgear have been underway as officials work to improve reliability and maintain the aging facility.
For residents who experienced the sudden outage Thursday night, the rapid restoration of electricity limited the disruption. Still, the sight of flames near such a significant infrastructure facility understandably raised concerns about whether the fire could threaten power generation, the dam itself, or nearby communities.
Based on the information currently available, there is no indication that the dam structure itself was endangered by the fire. Officials reported that the flames were confined to the exterior area of the powerhouse and that no injuries were reported.
Further inspections may provide additional information about the damaged electrical equipment and whether repairs or additional precautions will be necessary. For now, the Fort Peck Dam fire remains primarily an electrical infrastructure incident that caused a temporary regional outage rather than a reported threat to the dam’s structural integrity.
