Galyan, of West Liberty, Kentucky, passed away on Friday, August 28, 2026, at his residence at the age of 81. Born on January 4, 1945, in Jetson, Kentucky, Galyan was the son of Albert and Naomi Payne Galyan. Over the course of his life, he built a family and career that connected him closely with the people around him. He was married to Judy Warren, and together they raised two sons, James Edward II and Jeff.

His professional life reflected his versatility and willingness to take on responsibilities that allowed him to help others. Galyan worked in several different trades, including as a mechanic and HVAC supervisor. Later, he served as a youth counselor at the Woodsbend Youth Development Center, a role that placed him in a position to work with and support young people.

That variety of work illustrated a practical side of his character. Rather than being defined by a single profession, Galyan spent his working years developing skills and accepting opportunities to contribute. His experience as a mechanic and HVAC supervisor required technical knowledge and responsibility, while his later work as a youth counselor brought a different kind of service centered on people.

Family remained an important part of Galyan’s life. As a husband and father, he helped build the foundation of a family that would continue to carry his memory forward. Galyan was also a Christian and a member of West Liberty Church of Christ. His faith was an important part of his life and provided another connection to the community around him. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Larry Harper and Justin Harper. His passing now adds another chapter to the family’s history, while those who remain continue to carry the memories of the years they shared with him.

A funeral service for Galyan was held at Potter Funeral Home in West Liberty on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, with Elder Eric Conley officiating. A graveside service and burial were scheduled for Saturday, September 5, at Howell Cemetery in Searcy, Arkansas, with Powell Funeral Home assisting with the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family requested memorial donations be made to West Liberty Church of Christ, reflecting Galyan’s connection to his faith community.

James Edward Galyan’s passing marks the loss of a man who spent more than eight decades building relationships, supporting his family, working in service-oriented roles, and remaining connected to his faith. His memory will continue through his wife, children, grandchildren, extended family, friends, church community, and the many people whose lives intersected with his over the years.
